Electrical stimulation involves the application of electrical current to acupuncture needles as a means of stimulating the acupuncture points. Needles are inserted into the body and electrodes are attached to the handle of the needles. Electrical stimulation is used for conditions that require continuous stimulation in the area of concern. Most commonly this is used for neurological conditions, including chronic pain, muscles spasms, and paralysis. Traditionally stimulation was done by hand maniupulation. It involved inserting the needles, attaining qi (this may feel dull, heavy, prickly, or warm), then maniupulating the needle by hand to maintain the sensation of qi in the area. Electro-acupuncture is commonly used and is a very safe technique. Please let your practitioner know if you have a pacemaker, as electro-acupuncture should be avoided.
